1. Seed Structure & Function

Success Criteria

Your learning has been successful if you can do the following:

  1. I can define ‘germination’.

  2. I can label a diagram of a seed.

  3. I can correctly dissect a broad bean seed and identify seed structures.

  4. I can describe each of the structures making up the germinating seed.

Vocabulary

Learn these so you can communicate this concept well.

  1. Plumule: The first shoot that comes out of the seed.

  2. Testa: The outer covering of the seed.

  3. Cotyledon: The energy needed for the seed to germinate.

  4. Radicle: The first root that comes out of the seed.

  5. Micropyle: Where the water can get into the seed.

  6. Germination: The life process in which a seed changes from being dormant to actively growing.

  7. Seed: The embryonic stage of a plant. It has the potential to germinate and grow into a plant.

Hei Mahi (Do Now)

Do Now in your OneNote/Notebook:

Write one sentence to explain the function of a seed.

Exit Task

In your Learning Journal:

Re-write this interpreting question so it is asking about Seed Structure & Function:

How do the parts influence the whole?

Then, write an answer for it.

Exit Task

In your Learning Journal:

Re-write this interpreting question so it is asking about the testa:

What does it remind you of?

Then, write an answer for it.
