Lesson Plan: Common Laboratory Equipment
Do Now on page 10 of your Knowledge Book:
1. Why does hair need to be tied back in the lab?
2. Why should you not eat or drink in the lab?
3. What is the sand bucket used for?
4. What is technology?
5. What is Biology the study of?
In your Knowledge Book page 15:
Write down the names of THREE different items of scientific equipment, and their use in the laboratory.
In your Knowledge Book page 15:
List all the equipment you would need to boil 100 mL of water.
Knowledge: Common Laboratory Equipment (10 mins)
Equipment is needed to carry out experiments.
Students must know the names and function of each equipment.
Equipment can be grouped into categories:
Holding things
Containers
Heating
Other
Equipment is drawn in as simple, two dimensional symbols.
Activity: Scavenger Hunt (20 mins)
The information you need to complete the scavenger hunt has been spread out.
To complete the scavenger hunt, completely fill in the table as accurately as you can.
Teacher notes:
Lay out the 16 pieces of equipment at the front of the room. Number them from 1-16. It doesn't matter what piece of equipment is what number. Can use mini whiteboards.
Print and laminate the reference cards. One set per table group.
Instruct students that observations use their senses. Appropriate senses for this activity are sight and touch. From these observations (colour, surface, texture, weight), students can make inferences on what the piece of equipment is made out of and what it could be used for.
Activity: Inferring the Function of Laboratory Equipment (5 mins)
Sort out the 16 laboratory equipment according to their function:
Holding things
Container
Heating apparatus
Other (give an educated guess on what it is for)
Homework
Summarise the main ideas from today's lesson into your Whiteboard.
